Creative Brief: Essential Businesses

Once COVID-19 restrictions and shelter-at-home orders started to be implemented worldwide, businesses started to shut down literally overnight. But some essential businesses could not shut down, despite the inherent risks involved with operating during a global pandemic. • People with masks/protective equipment waiting in line, shopping, and eating at restaurants
  • Portraits of essential workers wearing masks/protective equipment, and/or social distancing
  • Controversial businesses that may not be truly “essential” (liquor stores, casinos, etc)
  • Shots of empty/closed/shuttered businesses that aren’t considered “essential”
  • POV Shots from essential workers’ perspective, interacting with people in need

Pro-Tip: First of all, the biggest thing here is to stay safe and healthy when making this content, and don’t shoot with more people than what your government or public health agencies recommend. Secondly, do your best to cast real-looking talent with real skills to get authentic content. Also, please be conscious of logos and other intellectual property as well.

Casting Considerations:  Race and gender diversity, authenticity with talent and imagery. Accept the challenge to subtract artificiality from your setups. In other words, keep it REAL. These things will play an important role in the success of your shoot.

Location Diversity: restaurants, delivery locations, inside essential business vehicles, city streets, suburban neighbourhoods, even online shopping interfaces,…

If you have any questions or comments about any of these briefs, please email Pond5’s Director of Audio Collections, Mike Pace, at

Western Vistas

We’re calling for attempts to capture the sound of big sky, endless vistas, native mysticism and the Promise of the West.

Same Tune, Different Moods

A client recently came to us with an odd request: multiple moods for the same melody (for example, an “upbeat” and “melancholy” version of the same underlying music). I thought this would be a cool experiment for the artist community to try: take a song and create two different versions (optimistic/contemplative, upbeat/slow, light/heavy, etc). Moreover, be sure to differentiate the moods in your titles (“I Love You” – Light Version, “I Love You” – Heavy Version)

  • SUGGESTED KEYWORDS: Describing the mood

Don’t Forget:

Take advantage of the 50-keyword limit and add both broad and specific keywords. On the other hand, do not use recognizable band or artist names, please!

We also encourage you to submit separate :15 and :30 versions of these tracks for social-media use.

Moreover, please note you can apply tags to existing tracks in your portfolio.

“The Calm company reached out to Pond5 to partner in using our content for their award-winning app. After working closely with their team through a 4-month process examining all technical requirements and gauging the distribution level, we were able to confirm their content & licensing needs.
It was great to start working with Calm at the very beginning of the company’s need for stock media, before the app’s present popularity, and to be able to help scale and transform it to its current level!”

  • To Be of Service

To Be of Service is a feature-length documentary film about war veterans suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and the impeccably trained service dogs they’re paired with to help them regain their lives. These veterans’ experiences returning home are often characterized by depression and a disconnect from the world they once inhabited. They struggle to return to civilian normality, whether it is a job or reunion with their families and old friends. The dogs bring independence and a feeling of safety along with a new measure of happiness and hope to these brave warriors we sent into the maw of war.
