What Is Nightcore Music

Nightcore is a music genre developed online, specifically on platforms like YouTube. Initially, the genre referred to a type of remix that sped up and increased the pitch of existing music, frequently accompanied by anime-inspired images. These remixes often feature a faster tempo, higher pitch, and sometimes different melodies than the original tunes.

History of the genre

The term “Nightcore” was derived from the name of the genre’s pioneers, Thomas S. Nilsen and Steffen Ojala Sderholm, also known by their stage names DJ TNT and DJ SOS.

Formed in the early 2000s, the Norwegian music duo specialized in generating remixes of various electronic dance music (EDM) and Eurodance songs. Nightcore remixes are distinguished by increased tempo and pitch, giving the songs a quicker and more cheerful feel.

The term “Nightcore” refers to their debut remix of La Bouche’s “Be My Lover.” They titled the remix “Nightcore,” and the moniker stuck not only for that particular remix but also for the entire genre they and others were developing.

Over time, the Nightcore genre evolved, and currently, there are original songs produced in the Nightcore style. Some Nightcore musicians compose their own music with the genre’s trademark fast speed and high-pitched vocals. It has grown in popularity, especially among anime fans and online gaming communities.

Nightcore Characteristics

We can clearly recognize this genre for its lively and upbeat nature, characterized by these essential elements:

  • Increased Tempo: One of the distinguishing characteristics of the genre is the considerable increase in tempo that adds to the lively and uplifting quality of the songs.
  • Elevated Pitch: Typically, Nightcore involves raising the pitch of the vocals, giving them a higher, young chipmunk feature. This change is a fundamental component of the genre’s distinct sound.
  • Pitch Shifting: Besides raising the pitch, pitch shifting is frequently used in Nightcore to generate a harmonious and coherent sound despite the increased velocity.
  • Energic Atmosphere: Nightcore songs aim to create a lively and dynamic atmosphere full of energy and excitement.
  • Cross-Genre Adaptation: Originally associated with EDM and Eurodance, Nightcore has expanded to cover various musical genres, such as pop, rock, hip-hop, and more.
