Creative Brief: Waste

Creative Brief – Special Keyword Code: WASTEP5BRIEF

This month‘s Creative Brief brings you Waste. After a year of the global population sheltering at home, the planet was dramatically altered–both for the good, and the not so good. While 84% of countries around the world reported air quality improvements in 2020, plastic production boomed as oil demand cratered and it became even cheaper to make plastics for single-use Personal Protective Equipment. Partner this PPE with takeout food containers and grocery delivery, and you’ve got an exponential increase of waste around the world. This is a chance to highlight this waste.

Creative Brief – Shot List Thought Starters:

  • Medical waste and other PPE litter on the street, in rivers/lakes/oceans, or in waste bins (all focal lengths)
  • (POV) Shots of someone sorting PPE and/or other plastic waste
  • Takeout containers overflowing in public spaces, or in home garbage cans
  • Aerial/drone shots of waste with empty streets and or natural environments
  • Macro/close up shots of hands cleaning up, discarding, and/or using single-use PPE/plastics
  • Various angles of manufacturing or creation of single-use PPE and/or plastics
  • Biodegradable/non-plastic food packaging and PPE
  • Restaurant workers loading food into plastic containers; patrons picking up to-go orders in containers

Suggested Keywords: waste, plastic, PPE, single use, pollution, environment, petroleum, pandemic (if applicable), covid19 (if applicable)

Typical Users: tech companies, news & media organizations, ad agencies, social media companies, vloggers, non-profits, political organizations

  • Dancing with the Stars

Dancing with the Stars is an American dance competition and television series that premiered June 1, 2005 on the US television network ABC. It is based on the British TV series Strictly Come Dancing produced by BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC.

Currently, the format has been licensed to air in 60 territories around the world. The format of the show consists of a celebrity paired with a professional dancer. Each couple performs a number of predetermined dances each week, competing against others for judges’ points and audience votes. The couple receiving the lowest combined total of judges’ points and audience votes is eliminated each week until only one couple remains.

“Season twenty-nine of Dancing with the Stars premiered September 14, 2020 on the US television network ABC. In the Fall of 2019, I worked closely with the team at Lime Grove Productions, which is responsible for clearance and post-production of this reality TV series.

The show normally consists of 10-15 episodes so I was thrilled to see how Pond5 could help in their filling air-time due to the unfortunate travel restrictions that were in place. Based on several conversations regarding content the show would need, including establishing shots from places they could not travel to, plus editorial clearances for commercial use, we determined an upfront credit pack deal would help with both savings and licensing efficiency throughout the production. We also gave them a bonus to work with and the show recently wrapped-up filming.

The new season is packed with celebrities including animal activist and star of Tiger King, Carole Baskin, rapper and singer Nelly, and female actor Anne Heche.

“The team at Sony Pictures Entertainment has relied on Pond5’s archival library for the last two seasons of the show. In this recent season, they chose to include several historical shots to support the time period of the show around the Moon landing and what would have happened if the Soviets had gotten there first.”

  • Asylum Entertainment

The Content Group, formerly Asylum Entertainment, has produced thousands of hours of reality TV series, miniseries, documentaries and features, both scripted and unscripted, and in all formats.

Their ongoing series, limited series, events, and anthologies such as ORIGINS: THE JOURNEY OF HUMANKIND or BREAKTHROUGH for National Geographic, Oxygen’s IN ICE COLD BLOOD, and Eli Roth’s HISTORY OF HORROR, an AMC series that delves into the rich stories behind the horror genre’s most influential films, have captivated audiences worldwide.

“Pond5 has been providing assets to Asylum Entertainment for several years. I originally negotiated a Minimum Spend Agreement with them back in 2017. In 2018, when Asylum’s production schedule was lighter for the coming 2019 season, Pond5 worked with them on a pay-as-you-go basis. The following year, Asylum’s production schedule increased for 2020 and their need for stock assets increased, so we agreed on a credit pack to provide creative content for all their projects in 2021.”
